1. Name a safety coordinatorOne person, by name, whose job includes safety. Everything below needs an owner.
2. Post a designated provider listPick two to four clinics with your carrier, post the list, hand it to every hire. An injured worker who goes to the right clinic on day one is the cheapest claim you will ever have.
3. Report every incident within 24 hoursLate-reported claims cost half again as much. A text to the coordinator counts; the form can follow.
4. Write the return-to-work programA list of light-duty jobs, agreed in advance, so a hurt roofer is back on the payroll in days, not on a claim for months.
5. Train and document fall protectionEvery roofer, before their first roof, with a signature. Falls are the claim that sets the mod.
6. Hold the tailgate talkFive minutes each morning on the day's hazards, logged. Carriers ask for the log.
7. Review open claims each quarterWith the adjuster. Reserves come down and claims close, and both move the mod.
